Press Release
Increase Your Bandwidth on Demand With AboveNet’s Metro-Express Plus – A Multiple Wavelength Service London, June 16, 2004 — AboveNet Communications UK Ltd, subsidiary of AboveNet Inc., a leading provider of integrated access services to leading edge enterprises, today announced the release of Metro-Express Plus. Having recently released Metro-Express - a single wavelength service, Metro-Express Plus compliments AboveNet’s new managed optical portfolio with an easily upgradeable, multiple wavelength offering. The simple upgrade path offered by Metro-Express Plus, enables customers to increase their wavelength capacity on demand. This replaces the more common approach of having to deploy new circuits to gain more capacity. Metro-Express Plus provides customers a completely private, secure solution with the choice of six speeds, Fast-Ethernet, Gigabit-Ethernet, Fibre Channel, STM-1, 4 and 16. With the ability to run any combination of these protocols simultaneously, along with a choice of redundancy, customers can build a bespoke service directly aligned with their business requirements, both now and when considering future upgrade paths. Metro-Express Plus will follow in the footsteps of AboveNet’s other products launched this year by providing customers with a dedicated pair of fibres on which their service will run. AboveNet continues to develop dedicated services in order to provide highly resilient, secure and flexible infrastructures that customers are now demanding when investing in new or alternative networks. “This product is the next step in our business strategy, that of being able to provide managed optical wavelength solutions to all companies within London, no matter how small or large their business bandwidth needs,” said John Dowbiggin, AboveNet UK’s MD. He continues, “We are seeing the imposition of rates on lit fibre having an effect on how corporations are planning their infrastructure upgrade strategies. No longer will an IT department just buy another pair of fibres; instead they will seek to utilise their existing infrastructures for more capacity where possible, something that new technologies are enabling us to increase rapidly.” “We have decided once again to use ADVA’s FSP500 range as it has enabled us to produce a solution that is technically sound, scaleable, reliable and easy to deploy, whilst not demanding large upfront investments from our customers wishing to replace or install a scaleable wavelength service to their business,” said Robert Ward, AboveNet technical director. “We’ve seen ADVA develop into a very strong player within this part of the optical market and we believe that launching Metro-Express Plus using their FSP500 technology allows AboveNet to offer multiple wavelength services at a level we’ve previously not been able to reach. This technology, along with our high quality low loss fiber and 24 hour Network Management Centre, offer a complete solution, and we can now extend our existing Metro product range to any customer with a fiber requirement." “We share AboveNet’s excitement with the release of Metro-Express Plus and are already seeing an increased demand for our FSP 500 on AboveNet’s superior dark fibre. Combine this technology partnership with AboveNet’s clear understanding of how to implement and manage this service and I am confident that Metro-Express Plus will become one of the superior optical solutions within the managed wavelength arena,” said Roy Friend, ADVA’s UK Carrier Sales Manager. AboveNet continues to develop products to leverage its existing dark fibre network and Global IP backbone. Its next optical wavelength product is set for release towards the end of summer 2004 and will compliment its expanding portfolio of managed solutions and network infrastructures.
