Metro-IP

Unsurpassed performance and cost savings

AboveNet’s Metro-IP Solution

AboveNet teams its Tier-1 global IP backbone with its metro fibre to create Metro-IP, a highly secure, direct connection to the internet providing massively scalable bandwidth.

Business today demands instant access to information and the ability to exchange mission critical data in real time. Effective corporate communication is increasingly important and access to reliable connectivity can be the difference between success and failure.

Metro-IP is a private internet connection delivered directly to your premises over a dedicated pair of AboveNet fibres and enables bandwidth speeds between 10Mbps and 10Gbps in increments of 10Mbps.

By utilising AboveNet fibre in the last mile, customers avoid the PSTN and other legacy telecom’s infrastructures which are often the cause of congestion and service disruption. The AboveNet service is delivered as Ethernet with standard interfaces removing the need for customers to have expensive WAN style interface cards which the traditional bearer model so often required.

Offering single or diverse connections, AboveNet’s highly trained engineers can provision a variety of solutions to best meet your needs. From basic internet access to fully meshed multi-site solutions running Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), AboveNet will work with you to design a solution tailored to your needs.

Features and Benefits

AboveNet IP Network
AboveNet operates one of the world’s leading IP backbones. Built to support IP with no legacy protocols or voice services, customers receive a direct connection to the core of the internet.

Massively Scalable
Fibre to the premises enables businesses previously restricted by legacy telecom networks to deploy state of the art IP connections that scale exponentially and on demand.

Reduced Complexity
Taking IP connectivity across dedicated fibre reduces the number of hops that your IP traffic would normally take to get to the public internet.  Your office to our backbone – One Hop!

Increased Reliability
Dedicated fibre is inherently reliable due to its lack of complexity. With very little to go wrong, its reliability is far greater than the average leased line connection.

Increased Performance
High capacity bandwidth without the usual latency of office internet connections or the need to co-locate web and content servers.

Low Cost
AboveNet’s service is priced at a fixed monthly fee dependent on the bandwidth commitment. Additional bandwidth is available on demand at a fixed rate. Gain massive bandwidth capacity for a fraction of the cost of IP delivered over SDH.

Product Design

The AboveNet fibre will be delivered in a point-to-point configuration between the customer premises and the chosen AboveNet IP enabled location. Customers are delivered either a Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet port.

The fibre will terminate at customer premises on an AboveNet installed ODF (Optical Distribution Frame), a cross-connect will connect the ODF to the Metro-IP module.

A port on the Metro-IP module will be allocated for connection into your internal network, this port is AboveNet’s demarcation point. High capacity 10Gbps solutions with direct router connection also available.

Metro-IP Components

AboveNet Fibre
1RU ODF will be provisioned at the customer location for fibre termination. 2 x single-mode fibres in a point-to-point configuration back to the AboveNet IP PoP.

Metro-IP Equipment
1RU Metro-IP module with dual power supplies will be provisioned at the customer location and a port allocated for connection to the customers network. Individual card and port allocated to each customer connection on the Metro-IP aggregation module within the AboveNet enabled IP PoP.

IP Port at AboveNet PoP
A cross-connect is taken from the Metro-IP aggregation module to the local AboveNet Cisco Switch. The Switch is uplinked to the AboveNet IP backbone to provide onward connectivity.

Customer Requirements

Customers are required to provide rack

space within their location for the installation of the ODF (standard 1RU) and the Metro-IP module (standard 1 RU).

All of the equipment will be solely owned and maintained by AboveNet.

IP Capacity

Customers commit to a bandwidth level of between 10Mbps and 10Gbps and this is charged at a fixed monthly rate. The Metro-IP service allows the customer to burst beyond this commitment with any burst being measured and charged separately. Customers are provided real-time bandwidth statistics through AboveNet’s customer portal so usage can be accurately monitored.

Design Options

AboveNet provides a bespoke design service to best meet customer requirements. For example this can include an option for a fully diverse service or a multi-site solution with BGP enabled connectivity. AboveNet can even work with an existing provider to provide multi-homed connectivity.

Product Support

Each customer order is allocated to a named Project Manager who maintains the responsibility to deliver the service and liaise with the customer. Once installed the customer has access to the AboveNet NMC via phone or email with all calls being tracked by the central ticketing system. With AboveNet owning the fibre, all equipment, holding its own spares and AboveNet engineers performing all works, there is a single point of responsibility for the entire service.
